If you’re pregnant and dealing with back pain, hip discomfort, or just feeling off-balance as your body changes, you may have heard other moms mention the Webster Technique. It’s one of the most well-known approaches in prenatal chiropractic care, and we get questions about it often here at Abrahamson Chiropractic & Wellness.
What Is the Webster Technique?
The Webster Technique is a gentle, specific chiropractic method developed in the 1980s by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. It focuses on the sacrum, pelvis, and the surrounding muscles and ligaments, aiming to restore balance to the pelvis as your body adapts to pregnancy. Rather than a standard adjustment, it combines a precise sacral analysis with light, targeted adjustments and soft tissue work.
What to Expect During a Session

Sessions are gentle and non-forceful, which is part of why many expectant moms find prenatal chiropractic care comfortable even late in pregnancy. The focus is on easing the common discomforts of pregnancy — things like low back pain, hip tightness, sciatica, and general pelvic strain — by supporting better balance and movement in the pelvis. As with any prenatal care, it’s worth looping in your OB or midwife, especially if you have any complicating factors like vaginal bleeding or placenta previa. Many offices, including ours, use a cutout or cushioned pregnancy pillow on the treatment table that supports your belly, letting you lie face-down comfortably and safely even in later trimesters.
Does It Help With Breech Babies?
This is the question we hear most. The honest answer: the Webster Technique is often discussed in connection with breech positioning because the idea is that a more balanced pelvis gives baby more room to move into a head-down position on their own, not that the chiropractor turns the baby directly. That said, the research here is still limited. A handful of small studies suggest a connection, but nothing close to the level of evidence you’d want before treating it as guaranteed, and major OB/GYN organizations have cautioned against marketing it as a fix for breech presentation. We think the honest, useful way to think about it is as one part of a broader plan to support comfort and balance during pregnancy, alongside your prenatal medical care, not a replacement for it.
Why See a Webster-Certified Chiropractor
Not every chiropractor who performs pelvic adjustments during pregnancy has gone through Webster-specific certification, which involves additional training through the ICPA. If you’re considering prenatal chiropractic care, it’s worth asking your provider about their specific training.
