Webster Technique at Abrahamson Chiropractic & Wellness

What is the Webster Technique and How Does it Work for Pregnant Women?

Chiropractic care in pregnancy is vital to the normal physiological function of both the mother and baby throughout pregnancy and birth. More women and birth providers are discovering the many benefits associated with chiropractic care in pregnancy and recognize this area of expertise through Webster Certification. The Webster Technique is a gentle chiropractic adjustment that aligns the pelvis and includes a soft tissue release of associated muscle groups. It allows the pelvis to function properly during pregnancy. The technique reduces soft tissue tension that may cause uterine torsion which allows for an ideal environment for the baby to grow and move. Webster’s technique is helpful in providing relief for common lower back and sciatic pains that pregnant women often experience.

Dr. Dave will start by performing an examination to his pregnant patients. He often starts by reducing tension in the gluteus muscles and piriformis before starting his adjustments of the sacrum and pelvis. Most pregnant women look forward to being able to rest on their bellies with the support of a pregnancy pillow that can continually be adjusted as mom grows to make room for the baby.

Dr. Dave adjusts the full spine as needed, sometimes using an activator tool to provide greater accuracy and reduce post adjustment soreness. The pelvis is a circle made up of three bones (two ilium and a sacrum) and three joints (two sacroiliac joints and the pubic symphysis) — Webster’s technique is effective because it addresses all joints of the pelvis. The final step of the treatment reduces any tension in round ligaments and hip flexors that might be providing discomfort or causing pelvic or uterine torsion.

The whole Webster’s technique treatment is comfortable and safe for both mom and baby. Patients often share with Dr. Dave they wish they would’ve started sooner or tried chiropractic during their previous pregnancies.

At each visit, Dr. Dave provides postures to start adopting and some to avoid. He demonstrates exercises and stretches on an individual basis to help with ailments and support an expecting mother’s ever changing body.

The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of subluxation and/or SI joint dysfunction. In so doing neurobiomechanical function in the sacral/pelvic region is improved.

Sacral subluxation may contribute to difficult labor for the mother (i.e., dystocia), caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby mal-presentation. Correction of sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia.
