Not every adjustment involves the traditional “pop.” For patients dealing with a herniated disc, sciatica, or chronic low back pain, one of the most effective tools we use isn’t a manual thrust at all — it’s flexion-distraction therapy, a gentle, table-assisted technique designed to take pressure off the spine rather than move it quickly.
If you’ve been told you have a disc problem, or you’ve tried regular adjustments and felt like your body needed something gentler, this is often where we start.
What Is Flexion-Distraction Therapy?
Flexion-distraction uses a specialized treatment table that slowly flexes (bends) and gently stretches the lower spine in a controlled, rhythmic motion. Instead of a quick manual adjustment, the table does the work — cycling through a slow stretch-and-release pattern that creates gentle traction through the lumbar spine.
That motion does two things: it takes pressure off compressed discs and nerve roots, and it helps restore normal movement to joints that have gotten stiff or restricted. It’s a technique with a long track record for disc-related back and leg pain specifically, which is part of why it’s stayed a staple in chiropractic care for decades.

What Is Flexion-Distraction Good For?
We reach for this technique most often with patients dealing with:
- Herniated or bulging discs
- Sciatica or nerve pain radiating into the leg
- Degenerative disc disease
- Spinal stenosis
- Facet joint pain
- Chronic, recurring low back pain that hasn’t responded to other approaches
It’s also a good option for patients who simply don’t want — or can’t tolerate — a traditional manual adjustment, including many older patients or anyone who’s had prior back surgery.
What Does Flexion-Distraction Feel Like?
This is usually the first question people ask, especially if they’ve never had it done before. There’s no cracking or popping — most patients describe it as a slow, rhythmic stretching sensation, similar to a gentle traction pull through the lower back. It’s one of the more relaxing treatments we offer, and it’s common for patients to feel noticeably looser by the end of a session.
Because it’s so gentle, it’s also a technique we can fine-tune in real time — adjusting the angle and amount of stretch based on exactly where you’re feeling pressure or discomfort that day.
Is Flexion-Distraction Right for You?
If you’re dealing with disc pain, sciatica, or chronic low back pain — or you’ve been hesitant to try chiropractic care because you’re not comfortable with a traditional adjustment — flexion-distraction may be a good fit. We’ll always start with an exam to confirm it’s the right approach for what’s actually going on with your spine.
